The Tucson Symphony Orchestra recently earned the distinction of being the only organization in 2008 to receive a National Endowment for the Arts grant for a local music education program.

The orchestra’s Young Composers project will receive the $15,000 it requested from the foundation.

“What a thrill it is to get this grant,” TSO executive director Susan Franano said in a release. “Based on my service on numerous NEA grant panels, I know how rare it is to be awarded the full grant amount requested. That only happens for the most compelling and outstanding work nationally. That’s the level of work the TSO is so proud to be providing to our community.”

TSO was one of two organizations in Arizona to receive funding.

In reaching the decision to fund the Young Composers Project, the NEA praised the high level of composition by young participants, the strong quality of the arts education and learning, and the setting of goals for the youth to achieve.
