A stranger’s cell phone near you keeps ringing. Do you dare answer it? What if the phone belongs to the guy at the next table who just bit the big one? That got your attention, didn’t it?

So starts the premise of “Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” an offbeat, adult comedy being performed now through Sept. 18 by Chicken Lipps Productions in collaboration with Studio Connections Presents.

It wouldn’t be much of a play if the innocent bystander avoided the ringing phone, so playwright Sarah Ruhl has her character, Jean, act on her curiosity and answer it.

That fateful act dials her deeply into the dead man’s mysterious business and his eccentric family – not to mention trips to the afterlife and the black market.

As one Website stated, “This imaginative and dark-edged new comedy is the captivating odyssey of a woman forced to confront her assumptions about morality, redemption and the need to connect in a technology-obsessed world.”

The play, which contains mature themes and some strong language, is directed by Laura Lippman. It stars Carrie Hill, Avis Judd and Gabriel Nagy, and features Robert Anthony Peters, Lisa Mae Roether and Martie Van der Voort.

All performances are at St. Francis in the Foothills Theatre, 4625 E. River Road. The show continues at 7:30 p.m. on the next two Fridays and Saturdays with 2 p.m. matinees on the next two Sundays.

Two special events are coming up. Monday is a pay-what-you-can industry night to honor working artists and friends of the arts.

The play starts at 7:30 p.m. In addition, a question-and-answer period will follow the Sept. 9 and Sept. 16 performances.

Tickets cost $18 for general admission and $16 for seniors and students. To reserve tickets, call 400-1424. Only cash and checks will be accepted at the door.
