Any jazz band that calls itself Fattburger is going to be a lot of fun.

From the earliest days of blues singers in barbeque joints, greasy food has been a staple of the music. Even better, the five San Diego musicians who call themselves Fattburger have been playing together for 24 years, feeding a dedicated fan base and putting smiles on their own faces, too.

This Fourth of July, Fattburger is coming to Loews Ventana Canyon Resort for a Tucson Jazz Society concert sure to include some finger-licking good music.

"We were just lucky enough to be playing the right sound at the right time," said drummer Kevin Koch, thinking back to the early days in 1986 when the band found its true jazz voice.

Right from the beginning, Fattburger always had a spirited audience. Based on a tub-thumping Latin percussion beat full of dance rhythms, propelling long smooth jazz jams played with a heart steeped in straight-ahead jazz, this band was just right for dancing, drinking and all-around good times.

It was those fans, in fact, who named the band Fattburger.

"We were just a house band without a name when we started," said Koch. "But one of our most popular songs was called 'Fatburger,' named for this mom-and-pop place in San Diego where we'd always go.

"Everybody kept telling us to call the band Fatburger, so finally we did."

That extra "t" in the name came about when the restaurant was bought out by a corporate food chain. The corporation sued the band to change its name, but cooler heads prevailed. The band Fatburger became the band Fattburger. Everybody was happy and the party kept on going.

Get the real goods Sunday, July 4, in Fattburger's 7 p.m. concert at Loews Ventana Canyon, 7000 N. Resort Drive. Tickets are $35 general admission, $25 for TJS members, $20 students. For details and reservations, http://www.tucsonjazz.org">www.tucsonjazz.org or 520-903-1265.
