Sultry jazz saxophonist and singer Jessy J will kick off the Tucson Jazz Society’s summer series Desert Heat with a Jazz Beat this Sunday, May 29 at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, 7000 N. Resort Drive, at 7:30 p.m.

Born in Portland, Ore., of Mexican-born parents, Jessy J’s childhood home was always filled with festive, live Latin music, including the La Banda music of her father´s home country.

Her musical appreciation also included the music of Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane and pop tunes.

She graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in jazz studies and was named “Most Outstanding Jazz Student” of her class. She then jumped quickly into recording sessions with artists like Michael Bublé.

With her sizzling mix of hot beats, Latin and samba rhythms, Jessy J’s debut CD, “Tequila Moon,” earned her such accolades as Radio and Records’ “Debut Artist of the Year.” Its title track was named contemporary jazz song of the year by R&R and Billboard.

“Jessy J is a wonderful performer who is one of my personal favorites,” says Rick Gregson, president of the Tucson Jazz Society. “Great smooth jazz, at a spectacular resort like Ventana, is our Memorial Day treat to Southern Arizona.”

General admission tickets are $35 for non-members, $25 for members and active military, and $20 for students.

They can be purchased online at www.tucsonjazz.org, or by calling 1-800-595-4TIX. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
