Diverse local foods are being celebrated this Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Oro Valley Farmers Market.

A local foods festival features prickly pears or nopales, mesquite flour, mesquite tortillas, heirloom beans and dried chile pods.

Desert Harvest Mesquite Milling is going to be at the market at Oro Valley Town Hall. The mill is "able to quickly grind mesquite pods into flour, and conveniently provide people with a fresh and nutritious local food product," a release said. People who want to mill mesquite pods should harvest three to five gallons of whole pods, yielding at least a gallon of flour after milling.

Chef Colin King from Harvest Restaurant is cooking heritage foods at the market starting at 10 a.m.

Winter hours resume at the farmers market on Oct. 16. They shift from 8 a.m.-noon to 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Each week, the Oro Valley Farmers' Market features local small food and farming businesses selling local and organic produce, fresh baked goods, fresh roasted coffees and teas, range-fed meats, gourmet soups and sauces. It "supports our entrepreneurial farmers and small economic businesses in order to preserve our agricultural traditions," the release concluded.
