Western National Parks Association, the Oro Valley-based nonprofit, is celebrating the release of its new book, “Frequently Asked Questions About Bats” by Rose Houk. A book-signing event and panel discussions featuring bat experts is set for Saturday, July 16. The book provides an insightful look at these mysterious and fascinating flying mammals and features detailed photographs and informative illustrations.

In addition, two dozen close-up images of many species bats in flight by wildlife photographer Bruce Taubert are displayed in the WNPA gallery all month. Both events are free to the public at the WNPA National Park Store at 12880 N. Vistoso Village Dr. in Oro Valley. For reservations, call the store at 622-6014.

Bat experts will share their experiences and insights on a variety of bat topics during panel discussions at noon and 2 p.m. Tim K. Snow, the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s authority on bats, will head the panel. He will be joined by Houk, Taubert, whose bat photo is featured on the cover of the book; Dawn Sokol, who designed the book cover; and Tumacácori National Historical Park Resource Manager Jeremy Moss, who recently conducted a bat survey at the park. The panel will be moderated by WNPA book editor Dan Stebbins.

Following each of the panel discussions, Houk, a Flagstaff-based writer and editor specializing in nature, history, and archaeology, will be on hand to sign “Frequently Asked Questions About Bats” ($6.95) as well as copies of her book “A Guide to National Parks of the Southwest” ($14.95).

The new book and bat-themed products, including T-shirts, caps, puppets, children’s books and photographs, are available at the store. Net proceeds from WNPA books sales fund education, interpretation and research in the 66 parks WNPA supports in the western United States.
