Applicants needed for spring's apprenticeships at Marana farm

The Youth Farm Project, housed at the Community Food Bank's Marana Heritage Farm, is taking applications for its spring youth apprentice program.

Young people ages 15 to 20 are paid a stipend to work and learn at the farm on 15 Saturdays beginning Feb. 6 and running through May 15, with a Saturday off every five weeks.

Successful applicants are those "who express interest in learning about farming and food systems, are able to work well with others, and demonstrate strong motivation and work ethic," a release said.

Apprentices and crew leaders work six to eight hours each Saturday starting at 8 a.m. Then, when temperatures rise, work begins earlier. Apprentices and crew leaders are responsible for their own transportation, and are paid a stipend upon completion of the program.

The Marana Heritage Farm is located at 12375 Heritage Park Drive in Marana. It is a 10-acre, organically managed vegetable farm in its third growing season.
