Those who prefer their fireworks in the form of up-tempo, sizzling jazz may want to spend this Fourth of July at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, grooving to the sounds of jazz / funk guitarist Nick Colionne.

The 7 p.m. concert is part of the Tucson Jazz Society's Jazz in Style summer concert series in the resort's Kiva Ballroom.

While today's musicians are judged by their ability to heat up the airwaves as well as the stage, not all are great at both. Colionne stands apart as one who is accumulating accolades for his breakthrough recordings and his compelling performances.

His 2003 cut "High Flyin'" reached No. 2 on the Radio & Records airplay chart, and his 2008 CD "No Limits" gained a Top 10 rating by Smooth Jazz News. In addition, Colionne was named International Instrumentalist Artist of the Year by the Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards in 2007, and has been nominated again for 2009.

Not only can this guitarist play with the best of them, often being compared to George Benson, but his seductive baritone vocals delight audiences and his showmanship keeps him in high demand. His soulful rendition of "Rainy Night in Georgia" is always a fan favorite.

The popularity of this artist has been highlighted by many experts in the jazz world, including Anne Aufterheide of http://SmoothViews.com">SmoothViews.com, who reported, "It's been awhile since I've attended such a high-energy show, and a long while since I've witnessed one with a standing ovation for every single song."

Paula Edelstein of http://AllMusic.com">AllMusic.com raved, "… it's Nick Colionne's guitar prowess that takes this CD ("No Limits") to the next level and makes it highly entertaining, romantic, bluesy and definitely without limits."

Backing Colionne for his Tucson show are bassist Dave Hiltebrand, keyboardists Tim Gant and John Erickson and drummer Chris Miskel.

Tickets for the Saturday, July 4 concert are $35 for the general public, $25 for TJS members and $10 for students and are available at Bookman's, http://www.tucsonjazz.org">www.tucsonjazz.org or by calling 520-903-1265 or 800-595-4849.
