Zach's Holiday House burning bright again in Linda Vista
Zach's Holiday House is geared up again this year to assist the Marana Community Food Bank in collecting more canned and non-perishable food items than ever before.
Zach Tarbet has spent 3 1/2 weeks designing and placing the 50,000 lights to fire up the Linda Vista neighborhood, on Shannon north of Overton.
Tarbet, a sophomore at the University of Arizona, has added to his display this year with dancing musical lights and a higher density of Christmas lights, a release said.
Tarbet said he's used approximately 350 feet of PVC pipe, 850 screws, tens of thousands of new lights, 35 power cords and half of the total power coming into the house to power up the display in Northwest Tucson.
"We want to give a little more to the community this year when times seem tougher for everyone," Tarbet said. "The fun of the Holiday House is the kids' reaction, their smiles and the benefits to the Marana Community Food Bank. Please come by and fill the bins with canned food for the Marana Community Food Bank."
Zach's Holiday House is located at 2848 West Ribera Place (one mile north of Overton Road on Shannon Road). "Follow the glow!" the release said.
Lights go on at dark and stay on until 10 p.m. each night.
Author, illustrator to visit K-6 kids
Linda Kranz at Twin Peaks Thursday
Author and illustrator Linda Kranz is visiting K-6 students at Twin Peaks Elementary School this Thursday, Dec. 10.
Kranz plans to "talk with, encourage, and read to students about the importance of making their school (and world) a better place," a release said. She'll also teach students about the benefits of journaling and the process of publishing.
Inspired by her book Only One You, Twin Peaks Elementary School's theme this year is teaching and encouraging students to take an active role in "Make School A Better Place." This story has become a favorite among students.
"With the help of the book's characters Mama, Papa and Adri, students are learning the power of positive thinking, valuing friendships, building self-esteem and making good choices," said Shari Attebery, Twin Peaks Elementary School counselor. Each week that Attebery visits classrooms, Adri makes a "guest appearance" to see how students are doing to make their school a better place. Students enjoy talking about the good choices they make, and the effect it has on their community.
All students kicked off this year's counseling theme by creating a sea of handprint fish which greets students, staff and visitors with a "Welcome to our school of friends" message.
Twin Peaks Elementary, within the Marana Unified School District, serves 501 students, grades K-6.
