The Tucson Regional Ballet opens its season this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12 and 13, with a performance of "A Southwest Nutcracker."

The performance features guest dancers from the American Ballet Theatre and live musical accompaniment by the Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

This original, full-length classical ballet translates the traditional Nutcracker to Tucson in the 1880s, complete with coyotes, cavalry and rattlesnakes.

Performances will be held at the Tucson Convention Center Music Hall this Saturday, Dec. 12, at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m.

One of the American Ballet Theatre guest dancers this weekend is Brittany DeGrofft, who'll perform as "Prickly Pear Fairy" (Sugar Plum), and presents the Grand Pas de Deux with Jared Mathews, a soloist from American Ballet Theatre.

DeGrofft, born in Tucson, studied classical ballet continuously with Tucson's Academy of Ballet from the age of six through her high school graduation. She was a performing member of the Tucson Regional Ballet Senior Company from 2003-2008.

DeGrofft has since trained in New York, joined American Ballet Theatre II in 2009, and has toured in Europe.
