Dr. Diane E. Levin, author of "So Sexy, So Soon," comes to Tucson this Friday, Nov. 12, to talk about how today's young children are influenced in a society saturated with images of sexual appearance and behavior – and what parents can do.

Levin is speaking at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Green Fields Country Day School in the Northwest.

Levin is the author of eight books, including the most recent "So Sexy, So Soon – The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids," co-authored with Jean Kilbourne.

Levin is professor of education at Wheelock College in Boston, where she's been training early childhood professionals for more than 25 years.

The media messages bombarding today's children can impact how they think about their bodies, being male and female and what they want to be, do and wear, a release said. "It can confuse children about the nature of adult relationships and promote precocious sexual behavior," Levin writes. Parents need to be able to recognize the impact this aggressive marketing has on their children and learn how to counteract those messages.

Levin's talk will offer parents age-appropriate strategies to counter the aggressive pop-culture marketing, the release continued.

Green Fields Lower School Principal Diana Hill met Levin through national education conferences. "Listening to her talk changed how I parent," Hill said. "Madison Avenue tells little girls that the sexy look is desirable, that one body type is the best. It tells little boys that mean is good, that tough is best, and that looking at girls as objects is OK. We need to keep un-teaching these lessons from the advertising world every generation."

Levin's public presentation is sponsored by Green Fields, the Office of the Pima County School Superintendent and the Southern Arizona Association for the Education of Young Children. Levin is also addressing the annual SAzAEYC conference on Nov. 13 at the University of Arizona.

Tickets to the public Green Fields event are $15 and can be ordered in advance at special.events@swchools.pima.gov, or by calling 740-8451. Tickets also will be sold at the door.

Green Fields is located at 6000 N. Camino de la Tierra, near Shannon and Orange Grove Roads.
