Renowned musicians, who have performed with notable artists around the world, will play an innovative interpretation of jazz, inspiring audiences of all ages for a free show.

Attendees can enjoy front-stage seating or dancing to musical beats, with remaining shows occurring on alternating Saturdays at 7 p.m., from July 2 to Aug. 27.

Sylvan Street offers an exceptional group of jazz players and recording artists performing Saturday, July 2 at 7 p.m. for the La Encantada Summer Concert Series, presented by Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance.

Jay Rees is a bandleader, composer and bass player.

In 2008, he formed Sylvan Street to perform his innovative collection of original jazz compositions. As an accomplished musician in jazz performance, Rees has performed with such notable jazz artists as Jimmy Cobb, Lenny White, Paul Horn and Randy Sandke. He has a diverse catalog of original music written for jazz, wind ensemble, concert bands, and athletic bands, commissioned and performed by major universities and high schools nationwide.

A native of Detroit, Rees lived in Miami and Los Angeles before moving to Tucson, where he brings his wealth of experience as conductor, composer, arranger and performer to his position as professor of music at the University of Arizona.

Bandleader Pete Swan is also a drummer, educator, vocalist and composer. He performs to create a sense of community through the power of musical expression. To Swan, music means trying new things and giving the opportunity to grow through taking chances by being in the moment. He co-wrote the Essentials of Be-Bop Drumming with drummer Artt Frank. Swan started Word of Mouth recording studio, producing local artists. He has been on the faculty of the Port Townsend Jazz Festival under Bud Shank for 20 years and has run a concert and jam session at the Old Pueblo Grill for more than a decade. Swan has played with such notable artists as Bud Shank, Bob Florence, Doug Webb, John Clayton, Kristin Korb, Judy Roberts, Greg Fishman, Brice Winston and Jason Carder, and produces shows with the Tucson Jazz Society.

The band also includes Kelland Thomas on saxophone, Kenny Smukal on trumpet, Frank Browne on guitar, Evan Rees on piano/keyboard, and Michael Faltin, percussion.

Sylvan Street has also created a music video, with artistic emphasis on the city of Tucson.

“This video features many wonderful and iconic Tucson locations,” Rees said. “It is a great representation of Tucson and my group.”
