Red Cross seeks year-end donations

It's not too late to make a tax-deductible donation to the Southern Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Donations can be made online between now and midnight Dec. 31.

Contributions go to help the Red Cross assist disaster victims in the community, provide CPR and first aid training, arrange lifesaving water training programs, coordinate terrorism preparedness and provide service to military personnel overseas.

Donations can be made at">, click the "Donate Now" button or call 318-6740 for more information.

Coin show in city Jan. 15-16

The Tucson International Coin Club is hosting the Tucson International Coin Show on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15-16.

The event is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day in the north exhibit hall of the Tucson Convention Center. Admission is $2 for adults, free for children.

Coin dealers from throughout the United States are expected to attend, a release said. They're buying and selling coins, currency, stamps, postcards, stamp covers, tokens, jewelry, documents, gold, silver, platinum, medals, Roman and Greek antiquities, rare collectibles, coin and stamp supplies. Dealers are providing free appraisals.

Walter Ostromecki, governor of the American Numismatic Association, is in charge of activities. There is a free children's treasure hunt.

A program benefiting the Tucson Community Food Bank also takes place. Attendees bringing a canned food or non-perishable food item receive the newest territorial state quarter, the 2009 Northern Mariana Islands quarter.

On display, for the first time, will be a collection of Indian cents valued at more than $1 million. Two new numismatic books, "Indian Cents" by Richard Snow and "Arizona Tokens" by Peter Spooner, are being released and signed by the authors.
