A charity event sponsored by Century Theatres in the new Oro Valley Marketplace drew more than 1,200 people Wednesday, and raised $2,010 for Catalina Community Services.

The new theater offered invitees admission to a movie and $1 concession items. All proceeds from concession sales went directly to the charitable organization, which provides food, clothing and other services to those in need.

“This event is very much needed and appreciated,” said Al Skorupski, executive director for Catalina Community Services. “Requests for food and clothing are up almost 20 percent over last year.”

“When we first knew we were expanding into Oro Valley, we asked for names of groups we could help out,” said James Meredith, vice president of marketing for Cinemark / Century Theatres. “The overwhelming response was CCS. We’re thrilled to be aiding such a highly respected organization.”

Century Theatres is sponsoring another event Nov. 22 to benefit Catalina Community Services. A canned food drive is planned with the support of local radio station 97.5 BOB-FM, with all food donated going to CCS.
