The Town of Oro Valley recently added an additional 1.75 acres to its collection of open space parcels.

Last week, the town council accepted the transfer of a section of commercial property in the Steam Pump Village shopping center, near Oracle Road.

The property owner, Evergreen Devco, agreed to give the property over to the town in exchange for not charging BASIS Charter School the $157,000 in fees.

An appraisal completed in May to determine the value of the parcel, a 75,000-square-foot tract, estimates the land would fetch $375,000 on the open market.

Town officials have said the property would be a good addition to Oro Valley's recreational amenities because of its proximity to a walking and bicycle trail along the Cañada del Oro Wash.

The trade was initiated as a way to attract highly regarded BASIS to the town. The new grade 5-12 school is going to open this semester.

School officials purchased 130,000 square feet of land within Steam Pump Village for $1.3 million to build the new school.

The town council approved the transfer of ownership unanimously.
