Beginning next week a local business will donate 10 percent of it’s pizza sales to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Shlomo and Vito’s New York Delicatessen, which recently opened its Pizza Kitchen, will honor it’s grand re-opening with a partnership with the LLS where funds from pizza sales from Friday, Aug. 17 to Sunday, Aug. 26 will be donated to the organization.

The deli, which is located at 2870 E. Skyline Drive, opened on Dec. 17, 2007, and has carefully altered and changed its menu over the years to meet the guest’s needs and desires, all the while staying true to New York style foods within their family recipes.

“It has taken four years to educate our their guests of what we are and perfect our products,” said Matt McKinnon, the general manager at Shlomo and Vito’s.

“Recently we brought in the pizza. It is like after the opening, we are saying, ‘our vision is complete. We’re here. Come see us. This is it. We have it all’,” he said.

Throughout the charitable partnership between the restaurant and LLS, a few events will be taking place including a Tucson Hunger Game where local high school football teams will compete for their chance to win a portion of the proceeds from that day.

On Sunday, Aug. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m., linemen from local high schools will compete to see who eats the most. The winning team will win the money for their respective school.

Doing events like this are important to McKinnon and the owners, Mel and Dean Greenberg.

“Any time you do something that injects extra dollars back into the community, it strengthens our community,” McKinnon said.

“For Dean and I,” Mel said, “It is always important to give back.

“On every level, if we all work together and we all support each other, everybody wins. And we try on every level to keep it in Tucson and in Arizona.”

The deli also serves breakfast all day long. They also serve sandwiches like their Shlomo Classic, which is 12 ounces of hot corned beef and/ or pastrami served on a Jewish rye.

They serve burgers and dogs, salads and comfort dinner foods like meatloaf, chicken potpie and country-fired chicken.

Their pizza is thin, New York style.

“It’s the kind of pizza that you fold, you don’t eat it with a fork. We say if you eat it with a fork, we’ll take it away from you. You have to fold it,” McKinnon joked.

“All of the ingredients are top-shelf ingredients. The meats are Boars Head meats, which we carry in our deli case. The cheese is an east-coast blend of mozzarella that we bring in special.”
