Offering free one-on-one mentoring, SCORE of Southern Arizona is a non-profit program that helps people start or grow their business.

SCORE is ranked the top program in Arizona and the fourth in the nation for offering such in-depth services for small business owners. The reason it has proven so beneficial is because most of the volunteers are retired executives with a passion to help small businesses succeed.

Sharon Grisby, a volunteer at SCORE, says that business owners who have no experience and those with more than 30 years, benefit from the meetings.

“Our volunteers mentor in every possible way – from creating an idea on a flying widget, just starting out, needing direction, marketing and more,” said Grisby. “It’s helpful information for anyone.”

Resources by SCORE are provided for people in workshops and online - all of the services are fairly inexpensive, but majority of them are free. These services are not just available in Arizona as there are 364 chapters throughout the U.S. with the headquarters being in Herndon, Va.

If a person can’t make a workshop resources are available online. Live webinars are one of those resources. The next one is on Oct. 8 at 9 a.m. and is called How to Really Start Your Own Business. Also available are templates and tools concerning finances in a business, management, technology, running and growing a business and marketing.
