With more than 400 locations throughout the U.S., Dickey’s Barbecue Pit opened its first restaurant on the northwest side of Tucson.

Travis Dickey first opened Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in 1941 in Dallas with a menu that only had barbecue beans, beef brisket, pit hams and potato chips. A little more than 20 years later, Travis’ two sons took over the business and expanded it into northern Texas. In 2006, Roland Dickey, Jr. assumed the role as president of the company as he continued to push for expansion in the company.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is one of the largest barbecue franchises in the country. The new Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, located on 7850 N. Oracle Road, opened its doors on May 22.

“What sets us apart is we’re more Texas-style barbecue,” said owner Dave Writh about Dickey’s Barbecue Pit compared to other restaurants in Tucson. “It’s typically not regional barbecue and we serve most of our items dry. So we allow the customer to sauce it as they like.”

Like the other locations, all of the meats are slow smoked in hickory wood burning pits in order to give the meat a tender and fresh taste. Meats range from ribs, turkey, sausage, chicken, pulled pork and brisket. Along with the meat dishes are the homemade side dishes, which include salads, barbecue beans, casserole, chips, fries, jalapeno beans, fried onion tanglers and more. The highlight for customers is all about the sauces and fresh meat.

“We’ve had a huge response that it’s very, very good barbecue and that our brisket and ribs are very tender,” said Writh.

Customers who want to have a sizeable meal, for a family get-together, tailgate party, picnic or for a special occasion, can order family pack meals. The XL Family Pack meal feeds six to eight people and includes three different meats, four medium sides and eight rolls and barbecue sauce. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit also offers other family and picnic pack meals. Kids meals are also available.

“We’ve got to get this up and running before we look into expansion,” said Writh. “We are looking at adding four more stores over the course of time.”
