Just over a year ago, Jeffrey Saunders and Beau Schuster decided to set up shop in Oro Valley, selling mattresses and bedding supplies.
The pair, who have been best friends since high school, both had a little bit of the entrepreneurial spirit about them, and after Schuster posed the idea to Saunders, they were all in.
On May 22, Arizona Beds opened its doors to the public, and the rest is history. With a showroom displaying a full range of top-notch products from Sealy to Serta, and all of the bedding accessories to match, Arizona Beds strives to provide high quality with the convenience of impeccable customer service that a small business has the ability to offer.
Saunders recounted how one buyer marveled at how he does everything from selling on the floor to delivering at home.
Saunders said his philosophy is, “Right now we’re small — why not do it all?”
As a former employee at Dun & Bradstreet, Saunders had been speaking with small business owners for years, and learned a thing or two about cutting corners by mere observation and knowledge, which has now proved practical as he takes on his own venture.
Literally from the ground up, Saunders tore down and remodeled the old realtor’s office, which once stood in the place where Arizona Beds now makes its home. “We have low overhead, no employees, and fortunately my mom has been able to volunteer her blood, sweat and tears into this place,” Saunders said.
A true family affair, even his 12-year-old daughter designed much of the store’s small website, and most of the office equipment, computers and artwork were taken out of Saunders’ own home. For what he can’t do himself, Saunders has committed to hiring local businesses and contractors whenever possible. “Keeping it local is important when you can because it keeps money in the community” Saunders said, adding that as one of these local businesses, he knows first-hand the importance of supporting one another.
With almost everything in the store made in the USA, and a lot of it in-state, Arizona Beds invites Oro Valley residents to like them on Facebook, call in to learn about specials, and come in to see what they have to offer each individual. With no tricks and no pressure, Arizona Beds has competitive pricing and a low price guarantee.
“I don’t mark things up so I can bring them down, which I’ve learned is the industry standard,” Saunders said.
With organic mattresses coming later this month, and a Comfort Exchange policy, which guarantees an exchange after 30 days if customers are unsatisfied, there is no time like the present to make the change to a new mattress. Along with its free delivery service, Arizona Beds offers free take away of your old mattress, which will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul.
Arizona Beds is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day at 7881 N. Oracle Rd.
