Three members of the class of 2008 have earned $2,000 individual scholarships from the Northern Pima County Chamber of Commerce.

Michelle Boyer, a senior at Marana High School, and Flowing Wells High School students Tamara Corrales and Amanda Rodriguez are recipients of the 2008 Steve Engle Scholarships.

Dr. Sylvia Lee, president of the Northwest Campus of Pima Community College, presented the awards at Thursday’s chamber breakfast.

Boyer plans to student English at the University of Arizona, and wants to become an English teacher at MHS.

“In the third grade, we were asked to write what you want to be,” Boyer aid. “There were a lot of Spice Girls and race car drivers. I wrote about being a teacher, and I won.”

Boyer, who also breeds and raises birds, expressed her thanks to her teachers and her mother.

Corrales, an engineering student, earned an Engle scholarship to include an award from ATS Southwest Inc. She plans to study engineering at UA, and wants to become a biomedical engineer.

Graduation is “an often nostalgic” time for seniors, who won’t have the familiar experiences of childhood, Corrales said. “Looking to the future is what’s really exciting,” she said.

Rodriguez wants to become a news reporter. She’ll study through dual enrollment at Pima College and UA, and will be the first in her family to go to college.

“It’s more important to pursue a career I’m passionate about, rather than making a lot of money and be miserable,” Rodriguez said.

A number of contributors fulfill the Engle scholarships, and a chamber committee makes the selections.
