The Oro Valley Town Council on Sept. 15 unanimously approved a contract renewal with Tucson Regional Economic Opportunities.
The renewal gives the economic development group $40,000 over the next year to include Oro Valley in its efforts to attract new industry to Southern Arizona.
"You have to remember regional benefits us," Councilman Steve Solomon said at the meeting. "When TREO brings in regional organizations like Raytheon or helps them, we benefit."
Councilman Bill Garner asked if the group includes Oro Valley specifically in its marketing and promotion efforts.
Town Economic Development Coordinator Amanda Jacobs said the group's efforts have been geared more toward a regional focus.
TREO does, however, organize tours for journalists working in specialty publications, which often results in the town being featured in national publications. Earlier this year the magazine BioScience featured a multi-page spread of Tucson area biomedical firms, including some in Oro Valley.
The group plans a similar press tour later this month when a group of writers from the aerospace and defense industry visit military installations and defense contractors in the area.
Garner asked that the contract be amended to include a mandate for quarterly reports from TREO. The amendment was accepted and passed with the original motion.
