One of only a couple gastropubs on the Northwest side of Tucson, The Parish, has made its mark by serving a variety of southern dishes, beers and cocktails.
“When people come in, they often ask, ‘What is a gastropub?’ All it means is a bar with great food,” said Steve Dunn, one of the Parish’s three owners. “It’s an emphasis on real foods made from scratch and craft beers from around the country.”
The Parish was started by Dunn, Bryce Zeagler and Chef Travis Peters, who all share ownership of the gastropub.
Dunn moved to Tucson in 2000 and became friends with Zeagler, who at the time was an owner of a restaurant. About seven years later, Dunn worked as a general manager at Cup Cafe where he hired Peters as his chef. Over time, both expressed their interest in wanting to open their own restaurant. Zeagler was brought in on the idea and in 2011 the three opened The Parish.
For the last 18 months, The Parish has attracted Tucsonans with its laid-back atmosphere, southern food and drink selections. Local musicians play every Friday and local artwork is featured throughout the gastropub.
“We are very supportive of local things, which is our art and live music,” said Dunn. “We also show up and want to be involved in our community like the baking fest which we are doing in a couple of weeks.”
Apart from going out to support the community, Dunn says that the primary focus is on serving its customers high end, quality food and a variety of good drinks. The Parish provides lunch and dinner, in which they serve southern dishes such as steak, salmon, oysters, burgers and more. The southern food is influenced by the restaurant owners’ backgrounds of living.
“We all have lived in southern states in the U.S. So we are taking foods from those places and kind of making it our own thing,” said Dunn. “That’s why we are called a southern fusion gastropub.”
Dunn believes The Parish has provided a space where people can enjoy themselves and be given quality service. As the year continues, Dunn hopes to continue to attract more people to his southern fusion gastropub.
