Summit Hut is taking applications for grants to be used for environmental benefit and public education.

Each year, the Tucson-based outdoors store hosts the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, a collection of mountain culture films with an environmental message. For the last few years, a portion of the proceeds has been donated back to the community in the form of grants. Last year’s grants were $2,000 each.

It’s time for 2011 grant applications, which are due Jan. 31.

Organizations can go to the Summit Hut website,">, to complete an electronic form using the “Submit By Email” link at the top left corner, or print and mail it to Banff Grant Application, c/o Summit Hut, 5045 E. Speedway, Tucson, 85712.

Applicants are rated based on their impact on the local outdoor environment and community, practicality and reach of the proposed project, and track record of success, a release said. Five finalists are being selected based their impact and reach in Tucson and Southern Arizona. Each finalist receives two tickets to the Banff Mountain Film Festival, and would be invited to set up an informational table at the event.

Applicants are being presented to Summit Hut customers on the company’s website,">, and its Facebook page, with voting Feb. 15-March 15. Winners of the $2,000 grants are announced at the Banff Mountain Film Festival on Friday, March 25, at the Fox Theatre. Three runners-up receive $250 Summit Hut gift cards to help in their programs.

Summit Hut is a locally owned hiking, camping and travel store based in Tucson. It has locations at Speedway at Rosemont and Wetmore at First.
