A neighborhood meeting for the proposed LA Fitness center has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Oro Valley Town Complex, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.

During the meeting, residents will hear a brief presentation of the proposed project from town staff, who will then address any issues or concerns residents may have. They also can provide background information on the review process and zoning code requirements.

LA Fitness is proposing to develop an indoor recreation facility on approximately 8-1/2 acres at the vacant northeast corner of Hardy and Oracle roads. Approximately 1-1/2 acres will remain as native, undisturbed vegetation.

Due to challenges providing the club’s large, single-level footprint with adequate parking and buffer areas on the dramatically sloping site, LA Fitness has filed for partial relief from the town’s current grading ordinance using a grading exception.

The exception is currently being processed as part of the Development Plan Review, with LA Fitness working with town staff to find what will be a reasonable balance that allows the club to be built, while still providing an aesthetically pleasing development and maintaining natural terrain features whenever possible.

LA Fitness has more than 360 sports clubs nationwide. It has been in business since 1984.

Anyone with questions regarding the proposed facility can contact Karen Berchtold, Oro Valley’s senior planner, at kberchtold@orovalleyaz.gov or 229-4814.
