Best of The Northwest

The Best of the Northwest received nearly 400 votes

In late January, The Explorer called out to readers to tell us who their favorite businesses throughout the Northwest community were. From Marana to Oro Valley, hundreds of businesses received votes from customers. While only a few made the finalist list, in compiling the results, The Explorer staff learned about many businesses we had never heard of, and plan on trying some of them out.

The Explorer website received nearly 400 votes throughout the two months polls were open.

The businesses taking first place in the poll are described throughout “The Best of the Northwest” special section. The section features all businesses that made the top three, or received enough votes to receive honorable mention.

All of the first-place winners will receive a hand-delivered certificate from Explorer Publisher Ryan Kedzierski, or Managing Editor Thelma Grimes.

Besides the special section in this week’s Explorer, all results can be seen on the website at

Best Hamburger Restaurant

In N Out Burger

8180 Cortaro Rd.

11545 N. Oracle Rd.

In 1948, the first In-N-Out Burger was founded by Harry and Esther Snyder in California. Harry’s idea of a drive-thru hamburger stand where customers could order through a two-way speaker box was quite unique. Harry’s idea caught on and California’s first drive-thru hamburger stand was born.

Quality, freshness, and service were very important to Harry and Esther. Their sons, Guy and Rich, learned the business from the “ground floor”. From an early age, Guy and Rich worked at In-N-Out, learning the principles that were to become the cornerstones of In-N-Out’s philosophy.

Now, In-N-Out has grown into a national chain, and with every new restaurant that opens in the Tucson area, customers are pleased.

Best Pizza Restaurant

Mama’s Pizza

7965 N. Oracle Rd.

The story of Mama’s is rooted miles away in New York City, but the catalyst for bringing the restaurant to Tucson springs from the love that ties children to parents. After many years of living and working in New York City, Joe and Eleanor Spina decided to retire. In 1975, with promises of monthly visits from their children, Kathryn, Joe Jr., and Vinnie, Joe and Eleanor packed their household memories, said goodbye to Long Island, and set their sights on Tucson.

After only a few long flights back and forth, Joe and Eleanor’s children decided they missed their parents, that family was just too important to waste time in the air. They made a collective decision to move west, their own manifest destiny.

According to family members, choosing a name for the restaurant was easy. The word Mama represented family, home, and love. It is a word common in many languages and could transcend the test of time; it was a nod to Mama, who always wanted a restaurant. When the doors to the New York restaurant opened, Joe, Vinnie, Kathryn, and Mama and Pop (who traveled east for the event) celebrated the grand opening together.

Now, with a recipe of hard work, talent and optimism, Quincy and Wanda are living their dreams. The joy they find in their family, their customers and creating fine cuisine is the magic ingredient that flavors their many celebrated dishes.

Noble Hops

1335 W. Lambert Ln.

The name Noble Hops was chosen because hops are the soul of beer and “Noble Hops” are considered the finest hops available.

These concepts are a natural for owners Aric and Josh Mussman. These Tucson-born brothers have changed the way Tucson, Oro Valley and Marana think about pizza and are known for the authentic Neapolitan pizza as a gourmet offering. And their two restaurants in Tucson and Marana are known as neighborhood establishments with loads of regulars.

So it goes with their newest concept, a focus on high quality, delicious food and a wide selection of hand-crafted beers. The menu will rotate seasonally and offer daily specials, which includes: small plates, salads, entrees and burgers.
