The University of Arizona baseball team swept a Sunday doubleheader and the three-game series against Alcorn State with 20-1 and 11-1 victories Sunday at Hi Corbett Field.

Arizona improved to 6-2 on the season, while Alcorn State dropped to 0-8.

The Wildcats outscored the Braves 31-2 in the two games Sunday paced by an offensive attack that hit .500 (.39-for-78). Five different players tallied five hits on the day, including Kevin Newman who was 5-for-10 with a team-high six runs scored and three runs batted in.

Scott Kingery led an aggressive running game that stole 14 bases in 19 attempts. Kingery had four in the first game, which tied a school single-game record set a dozen previous times.

Right-hander Cody Hamlin (2-0) earned the victory Sunday afternoon, going the distance for a complete-game victory. He struck out five and allowed just one run on five hits.

Lefty Tyler Crawford (1-1) was steady in the second game, pitching 6.1 innings with a run allowed on five hits. The effort was on the heels of a Wednesday midweek start when he pitched 5.2 innings, bringing his weekly total to 12.0 innings with only three runs allowed on nine hits to go with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Arizona’s pitching staff was in command all weekend, holding the Braves to a lowly .164 average. The Wildcats walked just one batter in the series and have issued just one base on balls in the last four games – a span of 37.0 innings.

The Wildcats will be back in action to host Seton Hall in a three-game series next weekend (Feb. 28-March 2). The series begins Friday night at 6 p.m. at Hi Corbett Field.

Game 1 Recap (Arizona 20, Alcorn State 1)

Cody Hamlin pitched a complete game and Arizona’s offense erupted with 20 runs on 19 hits to claim the first game of a doubleheader against Alcorn State by a score of 20-1.

Hamlin improved to 2-0 on the season as he earned his first complete game in his second career start for the Wildcats. The allowed one run on five hits and struck out five, while walking just one.

He received plenty of offensive support from Kevin Newman and a lineup that produced season-highs for base hits and runs scored. Newman was 4-for-6 with four runs scored and three runs batted in pacing a starting nine that had eight players collect multiple hits.

Scott Kingery added three hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in, and he stole four bases to tie the school record. The four stolen bases were the most in a single game for a Wildcat player since T.J. Steele in 2008.

Bobby Dalbec hit his second home run of the season – a two-run shot in the sixth inning – and added a bloop single to drive in a third run in the seventh inning. Dalbec is the only Wildcat to homer this season.

Alcorn State scratched its lone run across in the top of the sixth, but the Wildcats answered with four in the home half of the inning and then sent 13 men to the plate before the first out in what became a 10-run seventh inning.

Daniel Belmont (L, 0-1) took the loss after giving up the game’s first six runs over 4.1 innings. Johnathan Morales surrendered 13 runs – 11 earned – in 1.2 innings of relief. Scotty Peavey finished the game by allowing one run in the final 2.0 innings.

Game 2 Recap (Arizona 11, Alcorn State 1)

Arizona shook off a sluggish start with a season-high 20-hit effort to take the second game of the doubleheader from Alcorn State, 11-1.

The Braves claimed an early 1-0 lead and held the Wildcats scoreless in the first three innings. But Arizona’s bats came alive in the later innings, scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth before exploding for four runs in the sixth and five in the eighth.

Making his second start of the week, lefty Tyler Crawford picked up the win with 6.1 strong innings. He allowed only one run on five hits and did not issue a walk, buying time for the offense to break the game open.

Zach Gibbons, Trent Gilbert and Cody Ramer each had three hits in the game. Gilbert scored three runs and freshman Kenny Meimerstorf drove in a game-high three runs as part of his 2-for-4 effort.

In the four-run sixth inning, freshman Willie Calhoun delivered a two-run single, Gilbert added a run-scoring base hit and Scott Kingery knocked in a run on a perfectly executed bunt single.

In the five-run eighth inning, Jordan Berger lined a run-scoring single to center, Meimerstorf roped a two-run triple to left-center, and Gilbert tallied an RBI single to right.

Relievers Morgan Earman and Tyler Parmenter retired all eight hitters they faced. Earman, who worked 1.2 innings, struck out two.

Braves starter Danny Cornona (L, 0-2) kept the Wildcats off balance early, but suffered the loss after being charged with six runs – four earned – in 5.1 innings. He allowed 13 total hits and walked four.
