The University of Arizona saw increases in graduate program rankings this year    – particularly in its part-time master’s in business administration, computer science, education and mathematics. The programs were ranked in the 2015 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools.

“It’s gratifying to see hard work in graduate programs recognized and these are competitive programs,” said Andrew Carnie, dean of the UA Graduate College. “One thing this ranking misses is the depth and breadth of interdisciplinary research at the University of Arizona. We have surgeons in the College of Medicine collaborating with engineers to explore the frontiers of biomedical engineering and we have graduate students working with geographers, hydrologists and agricultural specialists to address the water needs of the desert Southwest, to name just two examples."

The UA’s part-time MBA program saw a significant jump in rankings, leaping from number 46 to 25 in the report, which lists the top 125 part-time MBAs. The program, held in the evenings through the Eller College of Management, is for busy professionals who are seeking to further their education and professional skill sets while remaining in the workforce.

In computer science, the UA saw an increase of seven points, from 47 to 40. Part of the rise is attributed to the department’s dedication to research    – it increased research expenditures by 182 percent in five years. It also increased its doctoral graduates by 77 percent over five years.

The UA’s graduate program in education saw a rise of three points, going from 51 to 48. The department attributes the recruitment of young, dynamic faculty, reputation and the admission of outstanding students to its gain in ranking.

The graduate program in mathematics also saw an increase, from 43 to 41.

The rankings are based on two forms of data    –  expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students in five areas    – engineering, medicine, law, business and education. Surveys, conducted over 2013 and 2014, were given to administrators at more than 1,350 programs and to more than 13,500 academics and professionals.

Periodically U.S. News & World Report also ranks programs in the sciences, humanities, health and other areas. These rankings are based on ratings by academic experts only. This year, peer assessment surveys were conducted in several areas.
