Fans of the perennial Australian rock gods, AC/DC, can breathe just a little bit easier. Rumors have arisen over the past week concerning the band’s retirement after over 40 years of heavy rocking. These rumors stemmed from news of poor health of founding member and rhythm guitarist, Malcolm Young.

The band finally spoke up to combat these rumors with a statement released on their website: “After 40 years of life dedicated to AC/DC, guitarist and founding member Malcolm Young is taking a break from the band due to ill health. Malcolm would like to thank the group’s diehard legions of fans worldwide for their never-ending love and support.”

After playing together for over thirty years, Johnson and the rest of AC/DC form a very tight family. Since the death of original lead singer Bon Scott in 1980, Johnson has headed one of the most influential and successful rock bands in the world. AC/DC had been planning to do their 40th year anniversary tour, playing forty different venues in forty different places, but now this mega-tour seems to be in a precarious limbo.

This sadly does not seem to just be a passing illness, either. Mark Gable, a fellow Australian musician, stated that the illness was quite serious: The most common rumor concerning what exactly the illness is, as nothing is officially confirmed, is that Young is suffering from a blood clot in his brain due to a recent stroke. During rehearsals at the beginning of this month, Young, 61, realized that he couldn’t play like he used to.

This sad news doesn’t just put a future tour in jeopardy, but a new album. Johnson also stated that, ““We are definitely getting together in May in Vancouver,” he said. “We’re going to pick up some guitars, have a plonk, and see if anybody has got any tunes or ideas. If anything happens, we’ll record it.”  This is bittersweet news at its finest. A new AC/DC album may soon be in the process of creation, but without one of its founding members.

AC/DC was formed in 1973 by Malcolm and his younger brother Angus Young, the latter being well known for his shorts and school-boy attire. Since its inception, AC/DC is been a constant force in the rock music world. Throughout the decades, the band has refused to change what they do, to change their sound, and the results are shown in popularity.

Despite the multiple lineup changes in the past few decades, the band remains where it should, working towards putting out more music.
