Taxpayer dollars are limited and support many needs across the community. Pima Animal Care Center has always recognized this and has long relied on the generous extra community support that comes to us each year.

With the hiring of our first-ever development director, we'll be doing even more to solicit grants and seek private donations to support our efforts to help our pets have seconds chances at love, health and security.

Karen Hollish came to the Center from the Petfinder Foundation, a Tucson-based nonprofit that issues grants to adoption groups across North America. Prior to that, she was with the fundraising department for the Humane Society of Southern Arizona, so she comes with a strong knowledge of the community.

A former daily newspaper reporter, Hollish caught the animal-sheltering bug while volunteering for the Humane Society of St. Thomas in the Caribbean, which has a significant pet-overpopulation problem.

"I am so excited to be a part of the transformation happening at Pima Animal Care," Hollish said. "We're in the midst of turning our County's only open-admission shelter into a truly progressive operation."

Pima Animal Care cares for about 24,000 animals annually - taking any pet that comes to our doors. So far this fiscal year, the Center has found temporary or permanent homes for 76 percent of our pets - a huge gain from two years ago, when our numbers were close to 55 percent. The addition of our new shelter veterinarian, Dr. Jennifer Wilcox, will help keep pets healthier and treat more of those needing extra care. Donations to our medical fund will help Dr. Wilcox and her team purchase antibiotics to treat conditions like upper-respiratory infections, buy sulfur dip to help pets heal from ringworm, and perform life-saving interventions for pets who come to us injured or abused.

"When our friends in the community donate to our medical fund, they are directly helping us save the lives of our community's most at-risk pets," Hollish said.

If you'd like to help please visit our donation page, or reach out directly to Hollish at or 520-243-5984.
