Back to school tips for parents and students

Preparing for the new school year is a process that the entire family has to deal with by changing schedules and habits.

Whenever possible, visit with your child’s new teacher prior to the first day of school.  This allows everyone to get to know one another and learn important things, such as where to line up on the first day, where the new classroom is, and what the new teacher will look like.

Purchase school supplies as early as possible.  Check to see if your child’s teacher has a supply list, and then shop together.  This activity promotes organization and a sense of excitement for the coming days.

Re-establish routines that may have been altered  during the summertime.  Begin to re-establish these routines at least a week prior to the first day of school.  Talk with your children about the importance of having these routines in place so that your children do not become too tired, hungry, or pressed for time.  

Some important routines include bedtimes, mealtimes,  morning schedules for getting out of the house on time, homework and the completion of additional chores

Talk with your children about returning to school.  Focus on the fun and excitement of a new year.  Address any lingering anxiety with the teacher or appropriate school personnel.  The new school year should be fun and exciting with a little preplanning everyone should have a good start of the year.
