Later this month, Tompkins Family Chiropractic and Jabez Hair and Nail Salon will be hosting the annual Stuff The Bus event to collect school supplies for Marana Unified School District students.
This year’s stuff the bus event will be held on July 26 and 27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Marana Walmart at Cortaro and Interstate 10.
They are accepting all new school supplies, from items for the students like notebooks, pencils and crayons, to items that teachers need like Kleenex, plastic bags, copy paper and dry-erase markers.
Dr. Emil Tompkins explained said they have a need to collect donated supplies each year because too often teachers are spending their own money to stock classrooms.
“They can use anything,” Tompkins said. “There is always a need.”
When Tompkins and his wife moved to town they wanted to do something to help kids. After some exploration they were directed out to Picture Rocks Elementary and soon began collecting items for the school and other rural schools. Eventually, Tompkins saw the need spread to all of the schools in the area.
“Since the economy got worse, everyone has a need,” Tompkins said. “Instead of just rural schools, all of the schools have a greater need. We focus on the needs of all of the students in the district.”
Thompkins, along with Benette Martinez of Jabez, hope to collect enough items to fill the need at all the area schools.
“We’re just looking to rally the community,” said Tompkins.
