For 10 years, the Arizona Distance Classic (ADC) has called Oro Valley home. For 10 years, this world-class event has attracted thousands of athletes and volunteers from four countries and all 50 states.

This race and these athletes have helped strengthen Oro Valley’s reputation as a mecca for outdoor recreation and youth and amateur sports. For the beginning athlete to the seasoned Olympian, sports activities cross many boundaries. In Oro Valley, we support the values of amateur athletics.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our participants and guests, and a gracious thank you to M3S Sports, and David Babner, race director.

Oro Valley has earned many distinctions, which make us the ideal location for this event. We’ve been named one of the Healthiest Towns in America, one of the Top 10 Safest Suburbs in America, and the Best Place to Raise Kids in Arizona. Combined with our great hotels, restaurants and shopping, I am confident you will enjoy your time in our beautiful community.

With the expansion of the $5 Aquatic Center, Oro Valley is also the proud home of the 2014 National Synchronized Swimming Championships, between April 8 and April 12, as well as many other state- and regional-level swim competitions. Our beautiful community has become a haven for hikers, runners, cyclists, swimmers, archers and wildlife enthusiasts of all ages.

While you’re in town, we hope you will take the time to experience the unique beauty of the Sonoran Desert and the Santa Catalina Mountains. Whether your pleasure is hiking, golfing, swimming, cycling, shopping or relaxing at a spa, you’ll find it here. Are you in the mood for a hip gastropub with great happy hour specials? Or perhaps an outdoor dining experience in a desert oasis? Are you partial to organic ingredients from local growers? Whatever your tastes, our restaurants are sure to please the palate. Round off your perfect day at one of our hotels, with a front row seat to some of the most stunning desert sunsets on Earth.

It is truly our pleasure to partner with M3S Sports and all the other sponsors to offer this great event, now in its 10th year. Best of luck to all participants, and welcome to Oro Valley, where outdoor recreation is in our nature.

(Editor’s Note: Satish Hiremath is the mayor of Oro Valley.)
