Welcome to the ninth annual Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and Northwest Medical Center 5k, hosted by Ventana Medical Systems and presented by The Town of Oro Valley, Northwest Medical Center and All About Running and Walking. The Arizona Distance Classic has become the ultimate spring celebration of the active healthy lifestyle in the world-class town of Oro Valley and this year again benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program.

The focus of the Arizona Distance Classic has always been on celebration and participation. This boutique race has continually evolved into a regional and national event with participants from 43 states and three nations.

Our mission is to provide the ultimate experience for our participants, partners and the community. The Town of Oro Valley has rolled out the red carpet for you and you will feel that welcome in all of the shops, restaurants and parks throughout the town. Our hope is that you will enjoy our focus on Celebrating You Like A Champion from the moment arrive on race morning at the campus of Ventana Medical Systems and take in the beautiful views of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Don’t forget your camera as you set off on one of the most scenic race courses in the country.

This year we celebrate Town of Oro Valley Vice Mayor and Council Member Lou Waters as our Honorary Race Director. In his semi-retirement from an immensely successful 40+ year career in journalism, Mr. Waters is a long-time fitness enthusiast who passionately advocates the establishment of healthy lifestyle for people of all ages, particularly for those in their “golden” years. It is also in Mr. Water’s honor that we developed the One Mile Champions Walk to motivate older adults to move from rocking chair to running shoes and join the celebration.

The Town of Oro Valley Parks and Recreation Department will again be hosting the 2013 Arizona Distance Classic Kids Fun Run for children 14 years and younger. We are thrilled to partner with them to promote the early adoption of the healthy active lifestyle to younger generations.

We are also proud of the work with our charity partners, who allow many of runners and walkers to “run for a reason” by raising money and awareness for great causes. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program is our official benefitting charity. Other official charities include the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation and the Angola Project.

Our event would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers who donate countless hours to guarantee your success on race day.

We also thank our official partners, including our new print media sponsor, Explorer Newspaper; Ventana Medical Systems; The Town of Oro Valley, Northwest Medical Center, and All About Running and Walking.

Thank you for joining us and Welcome to the Celebration!

(Editor’s Note: David Babner is the Arizona Distance Classic race director.)
