Good morning!

As we enter our fourth week, how are you doing? Well, I hope! I've been struggling so I decided I needed the extra support and regular counseling of a weight-loss group.

I was proud to join but here's the great news! As I arrived, I saw a good friend who also was attending for the first time, and we ran over and hugged each other! We were delighted to become "meeting buddies" and have already planned to have healthy lunches after each meeting from here on. Life's filled with great surprises!

Have you seen a doctor recently? He or she can help you with your weight-loss effort. I strongly encourage you consult with your physician and determine safe ways in which to drop weight.

In the meantime, Northwest Medical Center is offering a free cholesterol and glucose screening from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, at its Continental Reserve Urgent Care, 8333 N. Silverbell Road (on the southwest corner of Silverbell and Continental Reserve Loop). Space is limited and appointments are required, so call 866-NW4WELL (866-694-9355) to make your appointment. Plan about 15-30 minutes for the screening. FYI - You must fast for this screening. No food after midnight on June 17. Water and black coffee are OK.

Here are some tips to help you get through the week:

Be prepared.

Stock your cupboards and refrigerator with healthy food options. Don't forget your work pantry.

Stay aware.

Keep a food journal. There are many available at stores and online. Yours doesn't have to be anything elaborate. You can even use a weekly planning calendar. Many stores are clearing out their 2011 calendars for a dollar. Be sure to include what you ate and how much. We emotional eaters also should include our emotional state that day. Use it to plan your meals, too.

You are a remarkable person! Think about the things you have accomplished. Now think about all the wonderful things your future holds. Don't let physical or financial limitations hold you back. You have a lot to offer, so be the best you can be.

Have a great week!
