Northwest Fire District firefighters were called to the 4900 block of North Via Carina near North Oracle and River Roads just after midnight when multiple 9-1-1 calls were received reporting the townhome fire. The townhome complex is named Casa Carina Townhomes.

Crews arrived within 5 minutes to find the two-story duplex structure heavily involved with fire. Initial entry was made into the building and a primary search was completed ensuring no victims were inside. Additional crews arrived and assisted in the extinguishment of the fire. A ladder company arrived on the scene and placed the ariel ladder into position to make access to the roof so crews could effectively and rapidly cut ventilation holes to clear the interior structure of smoke and heat.

The fire was brought under control in just over an hour using 4 engine companies, 1 ladder company, a rescue company and support units totaling 25 firefighters. There was slight smoke damage to the adjoining occupancies, but crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to units on either side of the fire building. Residents adjacent to the fire building were evacuated during the fire operations, and all but one of the occupants was allowed to return home after the fire was brought under control. The unit just to the north of the fire unit also sustained some damage as firefighters searched for fire extensions from the main fire. The occupant was (A male aged 35) was assisted by the Red Cross with shelter for the evening.

The townhomes occupant was in the process of moving when the fire broke out. The owners of the townhome, as well as the occupant were alerted to the fire by neighbors and were at the scene assisting investigators.

Damages were estimated to be approximately $140,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
