The Pima Community College women’s tennis team (1-1) earned a sweep against Imperial Valley College (Calif.) 9-0 on Saturday at the West Campus.
Helena Meyer (Nogales HS) beat her No. 5 singles opponent 6-2, 6-4 to complete the match and help get the victory for the Aztecs. Meyer and doubles partner Julienne Cananea (Bradshaw Mountain HS) won their No. 2 doubles match 8-2.
Torie Wake (Lone Peak HS, UT) and Amy Beeston (Lehi HS, UT) won in No. 1 doubles competition 8-2 and afterwards Wake won her singles match 6-1, 6-0 and Beeston beat her opponent 6-0, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Vivian Pierson (Catalina HS) was the only player to get a shutout in her singles match as she won 6-0, 6-0. Pierson, along with Ashten Watts (Murray HS, UT), won their No. 3 doubles match 8-3 and Watts defeated her opponent at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-1.
“This was a dominating first win of the season, “Pima coach Gretchen Schantz said. “It gives us momentum and confidence for next week’s matches in Texas.”
The Aztecs will play at Collin College in Plano, TX on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as part of the Texas Tournament. On Friday, the Aztecs will play Temple Community College at 9 a.m. and then Collin College at 1:30 p.m.
