Jean Mellors Henika

Jean Mellors Henika, affectionately known as “Smiley” by all, left for her heavenly home on June 7 one day after her 84th birthday. Born in Berwyn, IL on June 6, 1929 the daughter of Tom Mellors and Nancy Ann Blackburn. She graduated from Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, IL in 1947 and Purdue University in 1951. At Purdue she was a member of Delta Gamma Fraternity and was a member of the varsity cheerleaders all four years. She married Morgan Henika of Lakewood, OH on April 5, 1952.

There are three children: Nancy (Kevin), Jim (Marcia), and Tom (Sandy), 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. They lived in Cleveland, OH; Doraville, GA; Natick, MA; Erie, PA and Norwalk, CT  before moving to Tucson in 1985 when Morgan retired. At each of these stops she was active in the Delta Gamma Alumnae activities serving in various capacities. While in Norwalk she served on the Board of the YMCA, as church treasurer and was a Den Mother and Girl Scout troop leader. She was a Real Estate Broker for many  years. When she arrived in Tucson she was recruited to be the Delta Gamma Province Alumnae Chairman for Arizona and Southern California. This involved advising existing chapters and forming new groups. She served on the Delta Gamma UofA Alpha Pi alumnae chapter’s board. She was awarded Delta Gamma’s Cable Award for service and their Loyalty Award for her long-term commitment of service to Delta Gamma.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 29 at 2 pm at Northwest Bible Church, 889 W. Chapala Drive, Tucson. Instead of flowers or gifts contributions to the Delta Gamma Foundation, 3250 Riverside Drive, Columbus, OH 43221-0397 would be welcomed.
